Pros

  • Brings tons of content to the existing Zoo Tycoon experience
  • Highly detailed and very cute animals

Cons

  • Not much narrative content once you work through the main campaign

The Ultimate Animal Collection takes one of the best zoo simulators on the market today and further expands it by providing you with the most comprehensive and complete version available. Building on the fundamentals of the existing Zoo Tycoon series, the Ultimate Animal Collection adds in some upgraded extras like 4K resolution, HDR support, and the ability to play at up to 60 frames per second. But the developer has also bolstered the core gameplay by adding a whole host of new animals like koalas, kangaroos, and cougars. This newest edition of the game even comes with whole new modes and challenges that smooths the barrier of entry for new players and creates a whole host of new hills to overcome for more experienced players.

And while there is a lot to love for old pros, the sheer amount of content available here will really help draw in new players. The new scenarios add a grand sense of narrative to the proceedings, but the bulk of playtime for most gamers is going to come in the form of the sandbox mode. These different modes really help flesh out the materials, but they also offer a good sense of variety and ensure that this is a simulation you could play for a long time to come.

In terms of gameplay, there isn't all that much new here, but what you will find is incredibly polished. From SimCity to Theme Park Simulator, this game has clearly learned what works and what doesn't from the games that preceded it, and it does a pretty exceptional job of making everything work all at once. Players who need a more narrative driven or hand holding experience will find some campaign materials to work through, but this is a game that benefits players who are more driven by exploration and a self defined sense of accomplishment rather than those who need more driven mission based experiences.
